Why Natural Wax Burns Cleaner — And Why It Matters for Your Home
Not all candles are created equal. The wax inside your candle makes a bigger difference than most people realise — here's why natural wax burns cleaner and why it matters for your home.
Why Natural Wax Burns Cleaner — And Why It Matters for Your Home
If you've ever burned a candle and noticed black soot on your walls, a smoky smell in the air, or a headache you couldn't quite explain — the wax is likely to blame.
Not all candles are created equal. And the wax inside your candle makes a bigger difference than most people realise.
At Yves London, every candle is hand-poured using a blend of coconut and rapeseed wax. Here's exactly why — and why it matters for you, your family and your home.
What Is Paraffin Wax — And Why Should You Care?
Most mass-produced candles — the ones you find in supermarkets and high street chains — are made from paraffin wax. Paraffin is a by-product of petroleum refining. In simple terms, it's derived from crude oil.
When paraffin burns, it releases a cocktail of chemicals into the air — including benzene and toluene, both of which are known toxins. It also produces significantly more soot than natural waxes, which is why you often see black marks appearing on walls, ceilings and jar lids after burning paraffin candles.
This doesn't mean every paraffin candle is dangerous. But it does mean that what you burn in your home matters — especially if you burn candles regularly, have children or pets, or care about air quality.
What Makes Natural Wax Different?
Natural waxes — including soy, coconut, rapeseed and beeswax — are derived from plants rather than petroleum. They burn at a lower temperature, which means they release fewer toxins and produce significantly less soot.
Here's what that means in practice:
Cleaner air. Natural waxes produce minimal soot when burned correctly, keeping your air — and your walls — cleaner.
Longer burn time.Because natural waxes burn at a lower temperature, they burn more slowly and evenly — giving you more hours from every candle.
Better scent throw. Natural waxes hold fragrance oils beautifully, releasing scent gradually and consistently rather than in one overwhelming burst.
Biodegradable. Natural waxes break down naturally — better for the environment and easier to clean from jars and surfaces.
Why Yves London Uses Coconut and Rapeseed Wax
We specifically chose a blend of coconut and rapeseed wax for our candles — and it wasn't a decision we made lightly.
Coconut wax is one of the most premium natural waxes available. It's sustainably harvested, burns exceptionally cleanly and has an incredible ability to hold fragrance — which is why our candles have such a strong, consistent scent throw from the moment you light them to the final burn.
Rapeseed wax is grown right here in the UK, making it one of the most locally sourced and sustainable wax options available. It has a beautiful creamy texture, burns slowly and evenly, and supports British farming.
Together, they create a wax blend that is:
- ✅ Clean burning — minimal soot and toxins
- ✅ Long lasting — slow, even burn
- ✅ Beautifully fragrant — excellent scent throw
- ✅ Sustainable — plant-based and biodegradable
- ✅ Phthalate free — no harmful chemical carriers
How to Get the Best Burn From Your Natural Wax Candle
Even the cleanest wax can produce soot if a candle isn't burned correctly. Here are a few simple tips to get the most from your Yves London candle:
Trim your wick. Always trim your wick to 5mm before each burn. A wick that is too long will produce more soot and cause the candle to burn unevenly.
Allow a full melt pool. On the first burn, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the jar. This prevents tunnelling and ensures an even burn for the lifetime of the candle.
Burn for 2-4 hours at a time. Avoid burning for longer than 4 hours in one session. This keeps the wick stable and the burn clean.
Keep away from draughts. A flickering flame produces more soot. Place your candle somewhere still and draught-free.
Stop at 10mm. When approximately 10mm of wax remains, it's time to retire your candle. Burning below this level can overheat the jar.
The Difference You Can Feel
We genuinely believe that once you burn a natural wax candle in your home, you'll notice the difference immediately. The scent is richer. The burn is cleaner. The air feels lighter. That's not marketing — it's chemistry.
And it's why we will never compromise on our wax. Every Yves London candle is hand-poured using our coconut and rapeseed blend, with phthalate-free fragrance oils and a cotton wick — because what goes into your home matters.
